Problematic is about facing problems and dealing with them regardless of how hard it might be. Running away may seem the best option, but it doesn’t solve anything and only make things worse. The song also points out a true friend will never give up easily but remains faithful through the tough times. As well, a true friend doesn’t patronize by saying what the other wants to hear, but patiently leads and guides toward dealing with the real issues.

The song may not depict the problems of every person specifically, but it creates a scenario each listener can personalize and use for encouragement. Thematically, the song climaxes in the bridge with, “Tomorrow will be brighter, I’m betting on the sun.” Of course, this is a word play on physical darkness being driven away by the rising sun versus a personal dark time being driven away by the influence of God’s Son.
